Dave999 wrote:what valves you go for and where did you get em

i'm looking fior a thin 1 stem 1 piece inlet about 5 inches long and head of 1.96-2.02 inches

and an exhaust of similar length with a head of 1.6

the choice is massive and i don't want to go off half cocked as it were

Dave

These new valves are from Ferrera but if you need a set of 1.6 and 2.02 valves i have a set of one piece Mancini racing stainless steel valves I will be selling with locks. I will measure the length of them tonight and let you know.
Ferrera exhaust is 4.970 long
Ferrera inlet is 4.9880 long

I dropped my heads off at The Cylinder Head Shop this morning to have the skimmed and got a call from Len this afternoon and he said I can collect them in the morning which is great so now I can put the heads on this weekend and measure the push rod length and then order them from the state and that should be engine done.

Hats off to you Anton ... great workmanship

Particularly enjoy it when you fabricate from scratch i.e. valve covers and steering wheel

Well done

Since my last update I have had the heads skimmed and then I took them to a friend of mine to mill the inlet faces down so the inlet manifold will fit. I have also got a set of 10 degree locks and retainers from Dave Billadeau and I have now reassembled the heads so now I can fit the heads and measure the new push rod length. Thanks to Jon Rutledge who gave me a old lifter which I turned into a solid lifter. I also got a brand new set of 383 push rods from Terry Redburn which I will be able to cut down( Thanks for the advice Jon Connoly) to the correct length to save me having to order custom ones from the States. So it won't be ready for the Nats but it's not far off now.

My new dash arrived yesterday and I went and picked it up this morning and I am well chuffed with the quality and can't wait to fit it to the car.

Roger I also have your new marker lights and will bring them to the Nats.

I've had a few noises coming from my diff and despite adding additive to the diff it went quiet for a while and then the noise came back so I borrowed a open diff off JohnR so that my car will still be driveable and this morning I took my diff out and discovered that one of the spider gears in the suregrip had broken up. I have stripped the suregrip and I will now get in touch with the person I brought it off and see what he will do as this suregrip is only eight months old. The damaged spider gear has also caused some damage to the gears the half shafts locate in. Lucky the ring and pinion gears are fine and there was no bits of metal in the oil. All the broken teeth where sitting in the bottom of the banyo.

Well after the problem I had with my spider gears breaking up I call John Wolfe(Mopar Madness) and told him of the damage to my sure grip he said he would send me a new set of gears under warranty and after a couple of weeks they arrived on Saturday and I reassembled the diff today so I can put it back in the car during the week ready for the Brighton run next weekend.

I have made some progress on on my rocker covers as well.
I finished making all the parts and I finally got a chance to get to a friends place to have them welded up and I am well chuffed at how they are coming along. I will be using a K&N filter type breather on these covers and to get the oil in the engine I can remove the filter. I have put a large baffle under the filter hole to stop oil spitting out. Once I have cleaned them up a bit more and taken a couple of scratches out the happen during welding I will be getting powder coated in textured black to match my air filter when I get round to making it.

After I installed the heads I found that there was a clearance issue with the 273 adjustable rocker arm and after talking to a few people the general consensus was to clearance the rocker arms till there was 60thou between spring retainer and rocker arm.I also cut some banana grooves in the rocker shafts to improve oiling and to take some of the side to side movement out of the rocker arms I added some weld to the rocker arm spacers and filed them till there was minimal clearance and the arms were centered on the valve tip. I also still had the issue that i need to shim the spring to get the correct install height but after talking to DaveB at the Nat's he said I could use -50thou locks to achieve the same thing and so I ordered up the locks and while I was at it I brought some better quality comp cam valve stem seals and the I did the final assembly of the heads and with a set of Cometic 40thou head gasket to hand I put the heads on the engine. i have also measured the correct length push rods and they are being done at the moment. So once the rocker covers and sump are powder coated I can finish my engine and then the fun of installing it comes.
