Blue, i think 8 thoy is a bit excessive, it is probably more like 8 tenths (of a thou) . to get the damper on with 8 thou interference would take a sledge hammer and a big bloke to swing it all day

You're probably right Trev, I need glasses! I was going to get you to have a look before I did anything silly with it....

blue i have always , 1200 grit the inside off the damper and end off crank warmed the damper in the oven bit off copperknob on the shaft then clubbed the damper on with a sledge and a block off oak against the damper, it does not harm the centre mains no way, at least then you feel the solid thud once its home,

Thinking about using a girdle on the 440 stroker , hence tying in the main caps , also gonna use alluminium caps (harmonics) , should be belt & braces as far as cap walk is concerned , only problem being the depth of the girdle. :-k

Blue , was thinking , would it fair any better using 'gas ports' in a high performance stock block with high cylinder pressures , especially if the block is'nt filled/girdle.

Was thinking going the gas ported route (vertical) with the 440 stroker , but the motor will see more street driving than strip , so gas ports will be a no no ................. may help the rings seal better bearing in mind 'flex' with the RB , i know you're using the 400 block but there may come a time when you wanna spray it.

Nearly forgot , their LIGHTER too.

:drwho:

Only messin about the spray john. :help: ........ :D

Brutus, you could also go for the 4 bolt main conversion from pro gram I had this done on my 400 block :thumbright:

four bolting them weakens them jim, best combo the 2 bolt billet caps,

BCR make about the best cap and girdle combo IMO, but I don't know how well it works in reality.

http://www.bcrproducts.com/caps_and_girdle_system.html

Monte Smith for one, claims the sides of the stock blocks are not rigid enough to get any real benefit from crossbolting, they are pretty thin. He was suffering from cap walk even with a megablock, using serious amounts of nitrous though...

Adam, I would think gas ports would wear out the rings really fast if you used them on the street.
At the end of the day I'm not a professional engine builder or someone with any personal experience of what works and what doesn't above 500hp, so I have to use my own judgment based on the opinions of those that have been there and done it.

the view is from a lot off the builders stateside, when i was havin trouble with ringseal on my hemi/440 conversion engine when i mentioned i had 4 bolted it they all said well you have weakened that block straight away,

That girdle/cap kit looks quality Blue.

could you bolt on an external girdle then across the "4bolt" bolts. under the balancer and across where the pan narrows gearbox end or am i just being naive.

much less restriction to how big on the outside (other than engine mounting). would look a bit daft but surly must help a bit if its the block thats twisting

All good info peeps. :thumbright:

The reason i won't opt for gas ports is the carbon build up on the piston (vertical ports), no problem if you're shoving shed loads of nitrous through it , as the motor would be torn down pretty regular anyways , could go lateral ports , lot's to think about.

Don't those girdles require a load of machine work to the block? , also am i right in thinking you gotta go external oiling? , gotta be worth it on a stock block seein 600+ hp , think you're stroker build is seein a tad more than that eh Blue. ;)

Don't wanna bore the pants off all of you again , but how many chop the plugs after a run? , as said . detonation wreaks havoc with pistons , crank , main caps , blah blah , some blocks fair better than others , but if you keep cylinder pressures to a reasonable level maybe the blocks would stand a better chance.
