Had four grand down my pants sat outside a dodgy north London tube station waiting for the 'man' to take me to the 1968 Mercury Cougar, he was all tattoos and hard, could have easily ripped me off.
Good as gold, his misses gave me sandwiches for the trip and the Mercury drove him without missing a beat.

Proper hijack, but I do have a Petty Blue Roadrunner ;)
When i went to buy this in Scotland it was fun 8-)cash only sale, went on train got picked up by Kenney at Glasgow station(he is a Buick GN owner 8-) ) they put me up in spare room and paid form a chinease tea, then went on a night out with Kenney...drove back from Scotland the Next day in the Roadrunner.

Just put the cash in a box and get it couriered.

Do it all the time even overseas when the Yanks don`t give their bank account details.

Sweet.
I remember Chris, the guy who flew in from Germany to buy my Dart. We gave him a bed for the night and bought him dinner in the pub. He drove home the next day.

I remember Triger Andy on here saying I was stupid cos the guy might have murdured me and my family in our beds and steal the car. Yep, can imagine a guy planning such an elaborate crime under the guise of buying a car
Sometimes you got to trust a guy. We're still in touch now and he still wishes my family well.
When he drove off, half the street cam out to wave goodbye!
Happy days

Anti German area then Miles!! ;) :D

Have to say i'd not take £4k in cash to buy a car let alone £14k unless i knew the guy/gal or they had dropped the price significantly for a cash only sale on a car that is worth more than i'm paying!

Bought the Dart though Chaps payment after visting in person, so was happy that a) i did'nt have excessive amounts of cash laying about, b) i knew where he lived and c) i was buying from someone i trusted. This was more to do with distance than anything else.

Was never invited to stay the night or bought dinner though......... :(

Will haggle that in on the next car! :D

I had £6K in my pocket when I went down to London to collect my Challenger. That was in 1989 when £6K was worth a lot more than it does now.

I felt secure enough. I was carrying a weapon of sorts.

But even better was my secret weapon. I had wor Lass with me. She can handle herself that lass I can tell you. ;)

Got nowt to do with being a pussy or a macho man Dunc.

You turn up to buy a car and get surrounded by 5 guys with baseball bats. Not much point being a macho vegtable!

Go look at car without cash to see if you wanna buy it.

Like car agree price in person!!

Pay next working day via Chaps etc.

The fastest way for both buyer and seller and should have some degree of safety over baseball bats and very good fake 50's.

I drove 500 mile round trip to buy my Dart.....I'd do it again tomorrow as that how i role!!! :D

Suppose its each to their own on this eh..... I viewed my car, paid a £500 deposit in cash from the local cashpoint after viewing, then got a bankers draft for when I collected the car. Personally, ive never worried about carrying cash but its always been as Dave says, when Ive met the seller, viewed the car/ bike and Im happy Im not getting ripped off. Knowin what Im like, I would be more worried about losing the wad than havin it taken off me! Just apply city rules, dont advertise the fact you are carrying cash, dont go where you shouldnt, etc and should be no probs but it is a personal choice really. I agree that the internet is a great tool for buying safely and at some point, after a meeting in person etc, you have to rely on a bit of trust.... Most of us are long enough in the tooth to know when something feels right or not and just be sensible. If private seller, check all docs, dont meet on a pub carpark, trader, just google them, if they are rip off merchants it will soon show up.... Bit of homework, bit of common sense and you can enjoy buyin the car of your dreams :thumbright:

Failing all this, ask Dunc to go with you, for a fee.... He will sort em out! :D :D

When youve been beaten up and kicked in by 3 blokes and robbed of 700 quid of Euros I just changed up you tend to think twice about carrying large sums of cash! Pussie or not I dont want to experience that again. Hence why Mrs was being so adamant about taking cash.

Carl, should have used the club. You could have flown down cheaply from Gatwick to Newquay and I could have driven you down to Kevs for the cost of the fuel. He's a nice bloke, easy to talk to.Ive seen the car in the flesh and its a good un.
Anyway, water under the bridge now, sure the new car will be what you want.

Mate of mine used to sell secondhand Rolex's, cash only. Some were proper large amounts. He would arrange to meet buyers in the foyer of Southend police station. Takes a brave man to try it on in a room full of coppers.

It wouldn't worry me to take a large sum of cash with me but I'd take precautions. I'm not saying how, but it would give me the option of buggering off sharpish if I didn't like the look of the scenario when I got there.
