I'm currently getting a similar problem and I've not nailed down the issue yet, my tyres on the rear came with the car and could well be out of balance but with my problem I can rev to 5k in N with no ill effect. In drive it is speed dependant, fine from 0 -55 ish then past that 'hold on fast' (the car feels like its going to go in any direction).

Pete will hopefully find something this week.

Good luck, I'm watching this to see what you find out on yours.

Jon

edit, two minutes ago looks like you might have found the problem!!! GREAT NEWS.

No dice! Ran it on jack stands without rear wheels as recommended but the vibration was still there!!

So I'm going to take Mark's advise & remove the prop & see what happens.

Still reckon it could be a bent halfshaft.

At least the wheels are ruled out, it's a process of elimination, one thing at a time.

You maybe right mate. I've looked it up & the symptoms fit. Will remove the prop 1st & if it's gone then I'll look at the half shafts next.

If it is a half shaft it would show up in uneven break wear .

I watched a newer episode of grave yar oricks and they were installing an engine but Mark moron noticed the engine was not sitting in the k frame evely,it was half cocked up on one side ,I had the same issue with my challenger,

I put the car up on stands and removed all the motor/trans mounts ,so it was sitting on 2 jacks, and I was able to move the engine and trans as a unit, got it line up better and it did rid the car of most of the vibration.

I feel your pain my car had some nasty vibes ,so bad it would vibrate the rear view mirror and I couldn't see out of it,and it was a night mare,I have it to the point that is is not bad,but I can still feel a harmonic vibration in the seat and I pretty much gave up.

I hope you have better luck than me ,also make sure the rear drums are not warped, that was an area on our cuda that was bad,I replace thEm and I have yet to drive it but the cuda has a similar vibe going on ,so when I get it on the road I have to chase another vibe, sorry for the hijack and long post but since yours is 4 pages long I figured I would chime in with my vib crap...........uggg :x

If you run it with the prop out, you'll lose all your trans fluid!!

Run it on the ground, in park, brake on.
If it vibrates it's forward of the converter. If it doesn't, it's behind the converter. Simples! :thumbright:

I used to have a vibration in my Barracuda it was fine a low speeds but when I got to 60+ mph I could feel the vibration and as the speed increased it got worse to the point I could see nothing from the rear view mirror. I went through everything as I am sure you have. I borrowed a set of wheels and tried those on the rear, fitted on a new set of rear drums, changed the half shafts and bearings.
When I had my gearbox rebuilt as it was slipping I also fitted a new convertor and fitted a new prop with all new U/J's and a new front yoke as it had a bit of slop in it upgrading to 1350 at the same time and a conversion U/J on the rear. Still vibrated.. I swooped out the pig as I want to change the rear gears still it vibrated. this went on for a few years and to be honest I just put up with it.
A few years later and plenty of abuse down the 1/4 I needed the box rebuilding again this time I had a new box built with all parts that would have be new to the car, when this box went in the vibration disappeared it had been the gearbox all along it drove lovely after that...

I haven't touched the car for a while Jon, I've got a shift kit & new seals which I'm going to fit over the Christmas holidays so I'll take another look at it then.
