I have not adjusted the HSAB's (though on the carb they can be changed).
I guess this is trial and error as well?

Why not jet for each cylinder , dont have to run identical jets on the secs , same goes for primaries.
You ever heard a V8 on song , better than a 5 finger shuffle.

No need for that high speed retard then.

Get the pump shots dialed in right , correct P/S jetting , right plugs for the combo , correct spark lead , HSABs , right size carb..........................no need to faf around with timing.

Never thought I would so completely agree with you Adam.

If you feel you have to use the high rpm retard could you not wire the 1st stage retard into a second tach switched via the shift light? , that way you can 'dial' in the retard @ any rpm.
The motor won't know whether you're in 1st 2nd or top , so if you think the retard is necesary @ a certain rpm then it won't hurt pulling timing out in any gear.
Just a thought.

You need to sort the HSABs first, then rejet for a flat A/F mix, then sort the idle bleeds if needed.
Choosing the right carb should have been your first choice
What size Acc Pumps are being used, pump shot, squirter size, are they covering the the launch, before the main jets take over... do you have a spacer
All this is attributable to initial rich/lean holes in performance

Tis coming from you Steve , you ask me to check your plugs & give you a tuning window when running the gas , when the motor does'nt perform you argue i gave you the wrong jet spread & timing figure , how can you expect to run decent times with no purge solinoid? , i run good #s on the spray so must be doin something right

, maybe read you're own plugs next time out & see what you pick up.
The ONLY damage on the motor is a lifted land , caused by arming the gas in the water box , NOT a tuning issue , when you can pull a plug that looks like it came out the box then you're somewhere close.
Every thing i post you argue the point , marbe sit back & have a think , did'nt realise my previous posting had to be in order , sorry , think were suffering from the same dillema goin by your previous post.
