I will be very surprised if it's not cracked, they nearly always are. It's a design flaw, the chassis rail flexes as you rock the steering, you can physically see it moving even on a good rail. If I was me, I'd brace the rail while you're in there, because you need the engine out to do it properly.

Will go and inspect closer tomorrow.
Not a great deal to tell today, except the engine and trans are both out now, didn't get enough time to start the front end bushings yet, though. Hey ho! Looks like they'll have to be done in the yard.
Took the opportunity to take advantage of the workshop tools for the day too. Your £10 a day buys you the use of all sorts of lovely kit like this, so seemed daft to pass up the chance to check the block and bores properly.

Satisfied that the bores were good and having checked the taper, took a bit more advantage of the hospitality and begged the jet wash and a load of degreaser before the block went to Jim's for honing.
Out with the compressed air and hey presto... Only fair to give a man a clean block to work on.

Off to Jim's with the block and all came up well. Many thank's to Jim ("Challenger" on here) for taking the time out on a Sunday to help us.
Over and above the call of duty and very greatfully appreciated, Mate.
So the engine is nearly ready to go back together, once some refresher parts arrive.
Not too many calamity's yesterday, despite a few more attempts to turn the workshop into a skating rink.... I did manage to find an ingenious way to stop a fair bit of the trans fluid getting as far as the floor once I dropped the pan off though... It's amazing what you can do when you use your head.

Thank's, Ivor. It's hard graft, but interesting and fun at the same time. It's only the time scale that's putting the pressure on really.
Finally made the decision on what cam to go with. More info :

Will have to wait and see what condition the heads and gear are in, still not had chance to get them apart yet.

Thank's. Really feel like it's too simplistic to post sometimes, but glad you're enjoying it as much as we are enjoying doing it. Keeps a nice photo diary for us to look back on when it's a concours winning super stock drag monster.
Just a little aside.... Back to trying to sort out the dash light problems.
Remember the wonky pins? Gareth took the opportunity to teach me how to solder. Should be easy to tell who did which ones, the neat ones are his!
There were one or two wobbly pins, so took the opportunity to clean the track and all the pins and make sure.
Hope that fixes the problem now.

Keep it up, boys!
(And keep a record of all these pages as the MB gets purged now and then esp. events and I have lost some treasured memories that way.....

Some of the Events threads were deleted a year or two ago to clear some space (not by me I hasten to add
) but since then I've been moving threads older than 1 year into Events Archive.
Nothing's been deleted since that 1 time.
Stu - you sure that's trans fluid? Looks like stigmata to me
