Yes that is correct. The adjustment is on one end only.

I adjusted up my axle before centering it under the car for that reason as my wheels were a tight fit.

Now got engine turning on the key, a spark on my test plug clamped to an earth, petrol in the tank and sucked up to the carb, timing somewhere about right, a working oil pressure light AND............

OIL Bananarama! out round the filter base, so off to Bedford in the morning for another filter. the rubber seal looks uneven now I've taken it off, so it may be a dodgy base or even the wrong filter.

I will have to check if there is a seal under the adapter plate or not?
Anyone know if this is a problem, and if there is a seal under the tin plate with the thread on it? Its a 318.

pretty sure it has a round flat gasket under the outer edge of the adaptor matt,,,

Anything clamped together needs a gasket.

Is it pouring out under pressure? I had this a few years back. The plate that holds the filter and is threaded into the block does have a round gasket and it must be torqued to 60lbs or it will leak.

Just found that this wasn't very tight
It had a gasket but it looks as though I never realised there is a square drive inside the filter thread to torque it up. Years of working on Triumphs which dont have anything like that on them.

From the look of it I think I may have removed the plate before with a drift in one of the holes, not realising about the square drive. It was 15 years ago that I built the engine, so I am quite glad it even turns over.

It was dribbling out under pressure, we were just trying to fire it up last night when Jack shouted out to stop. 14 year old helpers are very useful for lots of things.
