Lead is now in better shape- I got the profiling tool out again and it turns out I'd put TOO MUCH lead in over the top of the arch! Sorted now :thumbright:

I've got the inner sections fully welded, cleaned off and sprayed with zinc, along with the opening I'll be welding it into.

I had to tweak the repair sections a bit so some of the gaps opened up. This required some imaginative welding to join it all up ;)

My engine goodies arrived yesterday- big thanks to Andy :thumbright:

As expected the new valve is different.
Head & stem diameters are right but it’s around 50gms lighter and .05” longer.
Also the spring retainer sits lower on the stem so the spring will be .08” more compressed when closed.
I’ll assemble a head with this lot and see how the rocker sits and whether the spring will still have enough clearance between the coils.

If it doesn’t all sit right I’ll either have to search again for another valve, or get 8 of these and have my mate grind the stem down by .05”
If the spring binds I’ll have to find a different shaped set of spring retainers
Bugger!

db, your enthusiasm and get stuck in attitude is a real inspiration. I have read and watched the progress and build up of this car. Fantastic. British man in a shed mentality at its best sir.

This section had been bugging me anyway, the arch turned out so well it made this looked bloody awful!
Nowt for it but to hack it out and do a proper job :thumbright:

Unfortunately I don`t think that valve will be any good ... the seating dims look too different.

What was the original head and valve spec ?? ( there is Edelbrock, Indy and Indybrock ?? just to make it confusing )

The seat is much narrower on the new valve Jon, My optimistic eye saw better flow but of course it's never that simple is it? :?

The heads are 'Indybrock' then, ported by Barton.
The valves are- 2.05" head, 11/32" stem, overall length 5.02"

Am I right in thinking the new valve is an Edelbrock item ??

I think you will have to get the correct one from either Barton / Indy / Shadeydell.

I would go to Shadeydell first http://www.shadydellspeedshop.com/cylheads.htm

Good Luck :thumbright:

Yeah, I stupidly thought an Edelbrock valve might just fit an Edelbrock head... ;)
I'd not heard of Shadydell. I'll look into them, ta mate!

Sooo.... back to bodywork as I seem to be having more success there!

I finished welding in the first piece, then found pin holes further back so I chopped that out too. This let me in the cavity to clear out all the crud and spray a load of zinc in there...

ALL WELDING ON THIS SIDE OF THE CAR IS OFFICIALLY FINISHED!!! :D :D :D

Looking great Paul, I dont know how you do it mate at this time of the year. My garage is only 15 feet from my back door and I have not been anywhere near mine since it went in the garage after the Halloween bash at Shakey at the end of October. Hats off to you mate.

I'm with Jon on the valve mate, I would not be fitting just one of those why not order another 7 and do all the intakes the same at least then all the intakes will have the same installed height on the springs, :thumbright:

I would put 8 matched valves in it,you can buy + or - .050 locks to get the correct installed height,.080 will up spring pressure by about 20lbs on seat and 40lbs open.it can be a proper ball ache assembling heads :?

I'd definitely get a full set of these IF they will work with my head.

Guy- I just love doing it mate! Like I've said before I work at my own pace, if I don't feel like it I'll give it a miss.
Maybe cos it's my first serious build it's all still very exciting ;)

Dave- thanks for that mate, thats just what I need!
There's plenty of stem above the spring retainers so I could easy go .050. :thumbright:
