68 Charger front grille question

Hello all...

My winter work is well underway and I have spent the last week getting the front bumper off my Charger. (what a pain that was !)

My grill appears to be very loose (it moves up and down when you get hold of it - the whole assembly). As far as I can see it should be held in place by a number of nuts'bolts that seem to have big plastic/rubber washer things. (see picture).
Note on the second pic that A appears to have a bolt (in fact it is a bolt, I took it out to see. B appears to have nothing fixing it at all, but there is a screw thread down inside the holt. (like a bolt with the head missing). The rest on the top are like this. I just cannot see what holds them.
What should there 'grill fastenings' look like on a Charger ? Should they be bolts ? (If they should then mine is held in by about 2)...
Any idea how to get them out given they have no heads ?

I need to see someone elses I think. Any help/ advice/pics would be v.helpful.

Morgan,the only hassle free way to get the bumper off is to take it off complete via the irons that bolt to the chasis rails(20 min :shock: ).The ONLY way to get the grill out in one peice is to remove the complete front valance & pull the lot out, vaccume actuaters an all.If you try & get the grille out on it's own you will break it :cry: .Count yourself in for a good few hours work. :D :D
The grille is sanwiched in with around 10 bolts,you also need the plastic washers so as to not damage the grille when you refit it(Y1 complete kit)
The grille has the fixings on it to take the 10 small bolts.
BTW,I have two spare grills ;)

:iagree: My Fury goes together pretty much the same(headlamp doors) with the added luxury of the loop bumper that has to line up with the bonnet as well as the wings. Hours(read days)of entertainment.

Sorry Morgan,by the time I took the grille off,dimantled,painted,put back,all actuaters o/hauled,lights back,vac lines,THREE GOOD WEEKS :D :D keep slogin :thumbright: oh,plus bumper. :D

And after that it broke down again, If only Adam had bought a 70 in the first place ;)

Yea,grille fell off :lol: No seriously,car is ALL back together,never ran better :D Thanks for your concern Adrian :roll: :D

I have to say, taking the grille apart on my 70 was a nerve wracking job. I dont know if its any more / less difficult than on a 68, but it took me hours. I took every nut, bolt and screw I could see, out, and then spent what seemed like hours looking for the hidden ones. Every time I thought I had them all, there was another holding something in place.

Just my two penneth, I would have thought the fixings circled in the pics would be nuts n bolts with 2-piece spacers between the grille and the slam panel.

Oh, and I like 68's and 69's too :lol:

Well, I got the bumper off without taking the irons off the Chassis... ! I had to take the front valence off (one bolt had to be angleground off - nothing to get hold of). No big deal as I needed to get this repainted anyway, and restore the lights... It did take a while though - (certainly longer than the 20 minutes quoted Adam ! )

So it sounds like my grill is not held in right... Just to be sure, the fixer circled B above should be a bolt going through a bit plastic spacer into the grill yes ?

If so, anyone got any idea why (if you look closely at B) there is a thread sticking up ? It doesnt look like a broken bolt... :scratch:

My Grill is pretty crap actually (lots of broken bits round the frame). If I am going to have to take it off completely, then maybe I should think bigger. On the other hand, it seems to be in there now (if not attached properly) and looks OK from 10 feet away.

Decisions Decisions....

Morgan,I suspect the bolt circled B,is a repair @ some point & not as it would come from the factory.Good luck & make sure you have a break from it christmas day :D
BTW,I also love 69s & 70s & if I was being honest,I do like the 70 grille ;)

Mogs, those spacers will probably fall to bits when you get them out as they go all brittle and crack etc. No fear though, Year one sell them, part#MC680W for white and MC680B for black (mine were white originally))

They cost but a few pennies.
