There's a difference between upgrading and updating. The stock setup with upgrades can make a big difference without breaking the bank - V8 Mopars used the same torsion-bar setup for many years with great success.

Polybushes will tighten it up (though in the long term they need replacing more often than the stock rubber ones), you can get higher rate springs (IIRC they're available to the heavy duty spec fitted to Hemi cars etc) and tighter shocks. Make sure the steering gear has no play in it, and you can adjust the power steering box to provide more resistance (and with it much more feel for the road).

The anti-roll bar can be enlarged too ... any changes to the front will need changes to the back too, otherwise the car will handle terribly - rear anti-roll bar, shock and spring upgrades are easy to get for that end too.

Often a sloppy handling old Yank Tank will be down to worn parts, so its worth checking this route before measuring up for Viper wishbones ;)
