727 leak

I have got a leak on my 727, initially i thought it was the pan so i resealed it but it appears to be from up around the gear and kickdown linkage so i am thinking that a seal may have gone on the shaft coming out of the box.
Where could i buy this from .
I am hoping to do this by taking linkage and g/box cross member off and lowering it rather than take the box out completely.

You can replace the shaft seals by dropping the pan & the valve body. It's two or three hours' job. Duncan Watts can sell you the seals & tell you how to do it.

Yeah it's tricky with the trans still in the car but I managed so it can't be that hard. Remove all the linkages on that shaft and in your way and drop the pan off. Next remove the filter and change it later if needed.

The valve body is held in place with 10 x 1/4" screws. Take them out BUT remove the last screw very carefully as there is USUALLY a large spring between the valve body and the 1-2 accumulator which is a piston type thing. Make sure the accumulator piston does not fall out and roll away while you are not looking. Been there and done that. :oops:

There is a rod called the park rod that will be stopping the valve body dropping right off. Just note where it goes to so if it does come out you can Bananarama! back into the right place. But if it stays put you can just lower the valve body low enough to pull the gear selector shaft out of the seal and leave the valve body hanging there if you want.

The old seal will now knock out and you can put the new seal in. However it is normally tricky getting a hammer sized object above the seal with the trans in the car on most cars. I managed to tap the seal in with a 6x2 inch piece of 1/4" steel plate. It was all I could find that would go in the space.

Thanks for the advice Dave, i did'nt think i would be ablte to access the seal from inside.
I will either do that or i might pull the box out and stick an 11" convertor in at the same type, i'm not sure if i will keep the car long term .

You still have to access the seal from outside (above) but you need the selector shaft out of the way and that means dropping the valve body. Make sure the selector shaft is smooth and loctates centrally in the seal when you bolt it up. If the shaft is off center it will leak no matter how good the seal.

Also you MUST make sure the seal goes in evenly otherwise it will bend and leak badly.
