To dip or not to dip

I have been talking to a couple of people over the weekend about the best way to remove all the rust and muck from the car some have said shot blast and some have said acid dip. What experiences have you lot had and what would you recommend.

Having seen a number of bodyshells and other assorted panels I would highly recommend dipping! It eats away the rust up to where the panel becomes good again. Have a word with John @ JPC or better still pop down on a Saturday, its very impressive!

The shot blasting Ive seen leaves the metal really rough whereas dipping leaves it smooth, looks like the panel/shell has just come of the production line. At JPC the metalwork is treated and dipped in that black primer type paint that aftermarket panels arrive in.

I would go for a dip rather than be balsted with sand, as with dipping it you dont get loadsa sand in every oraface, only to reapear when you paint.

 ok you got me Adrian I was being lazy on the resizing front :P this is all ya getting :D

Oh and apparently the cost of dipping works out near enough the same as the manhours needed to scrape and sand. But its obviously more thorough and takes nowhere near the time needed to do it by hand.

Every word of what Phillippe said Martin.

( but then mine was dipped so I am biased).

Acid dipping will take EVRYTHING off leaving just a bare panel.

Took the decision to get John to dip mine even though it's not Dot Cotton.

Removes everthing but the bonus I reckon is that dipping it gets the rust and crud out of the hidden crevases and box sections and again too when the dip it in the protective paint....it gets in everywhere..............Something sandbalsting could never do.

Clivey....is your car back from dipping yet?

Out of interest has anyone got a ballpark figure for getting a bodyshell dipped?

James, I was talking to Clive about this on Sunday, and i think he said his was around £1,100, that's for transport to and from the dippers and the dipping.

:-k Thats not horribly expensive ...

does it get a bit cheaper if you sand off the paint from the accesible areas (less to contaminate the dip) ?

Is it worth the man hours to bother??

i mean just DAing the middle of the panels, like spending an hour doing it all getting the worst off. (im thinking of getting the fury tub done, and that should be cheaper anyway, as no roof :) )

Vipergts - Car back from the dippers quite a few moons ago. All panel and lead work donwe now and getting ready for painting.

I would say the ONLY drawback with acid dipping is that the acid removes EVERYTHING, including stuff inside yer sills etc. so when you do your rust proofing / painting it has to be thorough or lse you will end up with exposed mild steel in very difficult to treat areas.

Del, That price is ball park, but I think transportation is extra.

Speak to JPC for a quote, they acid dip nearly all their cars. IMHO its the only way to go.

PS: Vipgts - your cars body work is fantastic. Thats a real straight car there :thumbright:

I'm due to pop down there soon....look forward to seeing yours in progress.......Are you going body colour on the underside or black?

There should be no exposed steel as when the car is dipped in the black paint/sealer stuff it flows into all the cavities.

I'll still fill the car with waxoyl nonetheless.

Yes me thinks the car is well solid and straight. so much so it was a bit of a strange decision to stip and dip. I was originally just going for a bare metal blow job......
