I think this is to allow a little torque converter heat to escape the bellhousing, the majority of the 727's I have worked on have not had this hole present, but 2 that I knew for sure came out of motorhomes both had it. US bracket racers also cut a hole like that so that they can spray cold water on the converter to cool it down between rounds.

Hole in the top of the bellhousing for cooling eh? Mmm....

A while ago I cut out the raised portion of the access plate at the bottom of the bellhousing and fitted a mesh over it in the hope it would help keep the trans temp down as my trans cooler is marginal.

It didn't. I plan on fitting a better trans oil cooler at some point.

But a hole or holes in the top of the bellhousing might allow cool air to enter through my mesh and escape out of the top (under pressure at speed?) might it not?

Just a thought. I might get the drill out and try it.

That sounds like a plan, Dave!

I like the mesh idea Dave, I was suffering with hi trans temp (240 in traffic) at the nationals after fitting the larger convertor I just fitted a second trans cooler to sort ot my problem it now doent get above 185

i think that the hole in the top off the case is for timing the engine on some vans, that you could not see the timing pointer on the front, i havent ever seen a flex plate/converter with the timing marks on them though

the hole is for ignition timing on vans , it makes setting the timing a dodle , take off the engine cover and do it from the drivers seat , but not much help in a car.

u chaps with hot trannys, u running through the rad, or oil-to-air cooler only?

Used to run through the rad then into a four row. Since the BeCool went in I just run through the small four row. No problems, but it's an A-body and "only a 318" :D Havn't got a trans temp gauge, so I'm not worried
