Groan, Moan, possible power steering pump/ box?

Started the Charger up today and there's a groaning or moaning sound coming from the power steering and I can feel a kind of slight notchyness (spelling) when turning the steering wheel. I'm guessing that theres something wrong with the power steering pump / box (yes it's full of fluid), question is, could I be right and if I am and it needs replacing, would I be better off changing it for a firm feel steering box and pump or am I making the job more complicated by doing that rather than just changing the pump?

Just a thought, but are the pulleys/belys lined up correctly? Misalaignment as well as low fluid can cause those sort of noises.

yep, all the belts and pulleys are lined up and running true, the sound gets louder as I rev the car if that helps at all

Well if the noise is there without you turning the steering then it is the pump and nothing to do with the steering box. It will be a lot cheaper just replacing the pump.

Then again. Knowing how badly your front end is set up and or worn it might pay you to go right through the whole front end while you are on.

That would end up a bit pricey though. :(

Had all the front end done already Dave, it was done back in november and it's made an amazing difference. I'll start with the pump and see what happens after that

Grumbling whilst truning the wheel (feel rather than sound) is in my experience due to a worn box, and can be common in worm and gear setups. On old Fords (British) you could "bodge" your way out of trouble by adjusting the top plate. A trial and error-type excercise of tightening the bolts on each corner of the top plate slightly pulling the worm around till the tolerances are reduced between it and the gear. If this is the problem, doing the abopve only puts off the inevitable - a new / recon box. Not too sure what the failure mode is if left for ever (noise / feel may just get worse rather than fail catastrophically) but a rough box is an MOT fail. I had this issue with my MkII Consul. Similar principles may apply here. :?

Good! :D

This drawing might help you get the correct pump.
