I dont think there is an easy way to remove this stuff we have spent about 5 days so far trying all sorts of things and I have found that blow torch is better (quicker) than the electric air gun but you do have to watch that you dont get it too hot and blister the paint on the other side. I have taken the worst off with the flame then removed the odd bits with the wire brush in the drill. I just keep telling myself that it will look great when its finished

I brush over the stuff with diesel or paraffin a day or two before starting, softens it a treat and cuts down the dust.

I used a hot air gun (carefully!) and a scraper...then had forty eight showers and still smelled like a melting Arizona road for days afterwards

Nope, you're not wierd mate...there are other top smells including a race machine running on Castrol R and that lovely hot oil and smoke smell that comes from a steam engine...ooohh! rub it all over with an oily rag, sit back, light yer pipe and admire your handywork!

I usually use one of those wall paper scraper things (metal blade), put an edge on the end of the blade and then just scrape it off, no smelly hot stuff to worry about and risk of torching the car from the heat. It does take a bit longer and the little chips of underseal goes everywhere (wear some goggles), effective though
On the subject of smells, hot tar when a roof or a road is being done
