Hi RTSE.

Always cover bare metal with a good quality ETCH PRIMER.

This will stop any rusting of the new metal.

If you want to fill over the top of it, make sure you rough it up with 80 grit so the Bondo will grip!

ps Etch primer is toxic and cancerous, so no spraying without full respiration equipment!!!

That stuff is certainly a life shortener, I used to work in a place where some idiot would spray ally truck bodies with it, no mask, no ventilation nothing.

He's dead now, As Bacc says FULL resp equipment, and that doesn't mean a dust mask from Halfords

Whatever etch primer you get on there, get it on there as fast as possible, don't let any moisture near the bare metal.

Personally, I recommend a two pack epoxy etch primer, they don't put lead chromate in the stuff anymore but it's still pretty nasty.

As Baccman and Neil said, make sure you have full air fed respiratory equipment and decent extraction.

Don't forget, after you've keyed it, filled it and flatted it, any rub throughs to bare steel must be etch primed again or Mister Rust will pay you another visit...I've made that mistake before!
