Either a short circuit somewhere draing the battery (Easily checked with a volt meter).

Or bad connections somewhere.

Or (and quite often the cause) a bad voltage regulator.

There are lots of threads on this subject here. Try looking a few up and having a read.

Have a word with Wil. He stocks both types. Your car will probably have the older type of charging circuit and one of the field connections is probably earthed.

It is probably going to be easier to keep to the old style wiring and use a solid state version of the old mechanical regulator.

Stick a volt meter over the battery with the engine running and see what the voltage is. Try it at idle and then at higher rpms to see if the voltage is different at say 1000 and 2000rpm. You should have a constant voltage around the 14.5 volts mark.
