Yeah I remember it well. The guy was killed and the show was dropped for a time.
I think I remember correctly but didn't his show came back again with more stunts after a long break and another guy was killed when he jumped from a crane and his bungee rope was not attached correctly or something?
Or did it all happen the other way around?
There was a lot of trouble at the BBC because of it anyway.

After a bit more digging, it looks like Richard Smith was badly injured but survived
On September 10, 1983, stunt driver Richard Smith fractured his pelvis and injured his head, neck and back after crashing at 140mph during one such live stunt - an attempt to leap more than 230 feet in a car.

Glad he was OK. Shame about the poor sod jumping to his death for TV ratings though.
