Hi all,

I apologise again for the non mopar content but it is a kinda general matter.

Anyone know how to remove bearings from half shafts? And once done that, any one know where to find new ones???

This is off an FD Victor, I took the axle apart to try and work out why it was making such a racket. Not just the normal whine you get but a full on growel at high speeds. The odd bit is that the gears look ok, so I thought the bearings were the next most obvious bit.

Grinder and/or cold chisel I think

Cut through the retaining ring, carefull not to catch the shaft, take it off then press the bearing off the shaft.

If no press you can drill a hole through the inner race of the bearing then (wearing safety glasses A MUST) whack the hole with a big round punch and the race will split.

yes , cutting it off is the usual wayto remove them , to put the new one on i scafold tube is the old fasioned way , it works but isnt ideal , the ring is easier to put on if you heat it up first ( put it in the oven but dont tell the other half) then it will go on easy .

Only other problem is where do I get a new one. I was thinking if I can't get it from a Vauxhall supplier I may be able to get one to match from SKF or a similar company... problem is I can't seem to find a part number on it.

No I'm not sure at.

I really have no idea what is making the noise. It whines on acceleration (I'm told that is normal) and makes a grinding noise when I lift off the throttle at higher speeds. I thought there might be no oil in the diff, but there was. There doesn't seem to be any excessive wear on the crown wheel and pinion, the only other thing I could think off was the bearings, there is a little bit of end play but not masses. I guess the only other thing it could be is the incorrect preload on the pinion or side bearings. But suerly that would show up as odd wear on the gears?

I won't change the bearings just yet, I want to find out if I can get new ones before mullering off the old ones. Do you think I should not bother at all and just put it back together? Or does this require more serious attention? If so who does Vauxhall axles?

I think the old addage " If it ain't broke don't fix it" could apply - you could end up spending time & money on the Bearings and it could STILL make the noise when you put it back together again.........

Just had another look at the axle with the halfshafts back in and there is a notchy feeling to it as I rotate them.

Could that just be the gears meshing in the centre though?

I'd have thought they would mesh pretty smoothly unless knackered and then as you say it'd show up as a bad wear pattern- in my experience a notchy feeling is more likely to be bearings. Might be dirt in the grease or flats worn into 'em....i'd pull the shafts again and turn the bearings by hand, you'll soon know!!
