Not sure exactly what you have done but if you have over 15 volts from the battery then the voltage regulator is over charging the battery and it will boil.
If the problem was the amp meter then just put both wires that went to the ammeter onto the same ammeter terminal. That way you are by-passing the ammeter.
If the problem is in the bulkhead connection (on the wire that runs from the battery to the ammeter) then by-passing the ammeter will not make any difference.
So you should be able to find out the source of the problem that way.
