1971 Challenger T/A

I was reading through one of my new books yesterday, and saw a picture of that old advertisement from Dodge with the yellow '71 T/A on it.

I remember this advert and its credibility came up on here some time ago (I can't find it) and was wondering where we got to on whether such a car existed. Was there a one-off prototype or was this car a styling exercise for advertisement purposes. If it was a styling exercise, there must have been a will within Dodge to produce one otherwise why produce the advert?

Have a look here, Clivey. http://www.allpar.com/model/challenger.html

It was this bit that caught the attention:

"In 1971, the Challenger received a minor facelift, most notably in grille and taillight treatments, and the addition of dummy brake cooling slots on the R/T models. The Special Edition Model lost the smaller rear window. The Trans Am, and Deputy models were dropped. A retouched ad showing a 1971 T/A does exist, most likely a means for Chrysler to get rid of extra parts. The 440 four barrel was also dropped from the R/T line up."

It was a re-touched version of the same photo used to advertise the 70 T/A the year before.

No prototype was ever made. If it was it was never photographed. Chrysler got out of the Trans Am series before one was ever produced.

Not wanting to be argumentative Dave, but that link Stupot put up suggests there were 71 T/A's although they came with a 340-4bbl instead of the six pack motor. Did I read that right???

I wonder what the order / delivery date was of the last T/A to be made was.

Clive. I have had to go over this time and time again over the years. I don't want to go over it in any detail again.

The 71 T/A was planned. Including the ideas to use a 340 4bbl. But it never got any further than that. That photo is the 1970 T/A from the year before. The front end has been airbrushed on. It never got made.

Actually. That article you are reading is FULL of mistakes. It was written by an idiot that knows nothing about the Challenger at all.

There was no 1971 SE model. Although you could still order the formal roof code A78.
There was no 1971 440 R/T (only the 440+6 R/T)

Etc etc... I can't be bothered with any more.
