General Lee orange

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to find out the colour orange that was used on the Warner Bros 'General Lees'. Thought it was Chevy Flame red but my paintshop can't find this listed in a solid colour. I remember speaking to someone at Brooklands who said it was Renault Rouge but there are seven different ones. If someone out there has recently painted their General and knows the paint name, code and year I'd be grateful. At present I have an engine bay in grey primer patiently waiting.

Thanks for your help

it's all down to personal preference, whether you want it to look pale orange (not actualy that nicer colour, i have seen a real general in the flesh) or the orange that it LOOKS like it is on the telly etc. (and the Corgi model is actually)
I got my paint matched to the Corgi model and the colour they gave me was Renault Rouge code 734 . I painted the engine bay in it and it was , to my eyes, absolutely spot on to how I wanted it to look. And when the bodyshop put that colour on the body, again it looked exactly like what I was aiming for. No post-sprayjob pangs of doubt.

Just my 0:02

I'm lost for words, someone used the words "lee" and "getting it right" in the same sentence without a trace of irony.....

Some clone cars are 'hemi orange' - some are hugger orange.
I actually have a book that lists somewhere....

The trruble is they varied it. Essentially whatever they had lying about and mixed at the time.

Look at these pics. See the difference ? Which is right - I dunno...
The second pic is a real lee (one of the surviving 17).

There are loads of websites on this subject.

(gimme a min to find the pics - will apend later)

Hi Jason,

Mine was painted in Vermilion Orange which is an MG colour. Adrian (Charger 01) has also used this shade.

Sorry about delay - here the pics.

Single car is a "real" lee (one of the 17) - I have a few pics of this full size. (this is a shrunken one).

The 2 cars just shows some of the variations.
Like I say 'Hemi' or 'hugger' are the usual choices - V.Interested to learn what colour Phils is though !

In the pic of the two cars, I prefer the second (car at the back) colour (shade).
I always thought ford vista orange was a close match

Alot of people think that when the tv series' were being made that they used whatever paint they could get hold of, which is probably true.
But sometimes it depended on the lighting and cameras - There are two pictures of the same car below that were taken using different cameras....see what i mean??

Quote from a website...

"Paint Color

The "orange" paint used on the GL is one of the pieces of the equation that doesn't have an easy answer. Current talk indicates that Corvette Flame Red, Hemi Orange and Big Bad Orange are all correct colors. BBO (Big Bad Orange) is reported to be the color used on the 2005 movie cars. From the best I can gather, there is no specific paint color that was used and the designers just picked an orange color off a paint chip and duplicated that. Also, different auto shops worked on the cars during the course of the series and had different access to paints. A third color you will find on replicas is "Vitamin C Orange". This color appears VERY light orange and looks the least like an authentic GL.

To add to the problem of picking the right color, car colors look VERY different based on the lighting and the cameras used to photograph the car. A Corvette Flame Red car can look very red in one picture and very orange in another. This makes for lots of confusion when people discuss what the correct color is."
