Thanks

Yes you can rebuild it

basically the internals are the same as the US boxes i believe that it is only the case differs

or

send it to an aus supplier and get a rebuilt one back.
http://www.pentastarparts.com.au/sunsho ... ail&p=1119

$475 = £230

or mail Ray at the above site and he can probably source the bits... you are far enough away for him to tell you how its done without danger of you setting up in competition with him. :)

usually takes him about a week to respond unless he thinks there is a sale to be made if you catch me drift

a swap to manual is simple but you would either need to get a manual steering shaft for the column or get some kind of extension.
the former would be easy if we were in australia.

manual boxes on aussie vals from VE onwards
and from US built RHD barracuda and probably any other RHD abody are all the same

sure it needs to be rebuilt??
if it is just leaking then its a seal issue nothing else.
if its the seal at the bottom of the box under the car it can be removed and replaced without dismantling the box. a bearing supply place should be able to supply a metal/rubber/spring seal. ite seasier if you take either the seal or the box with you.

anyway

i have a 4.4 meg scan of the appropriate chapter of the factory service manual.

also if you are really really really stuck i have a NOS sector shaft from a US box in my "If things really go wrong pile" its from a 1962 somthing or other so no garantees it would fit. it was new and cheap and never out of its box so i horded it.

mail me at

David.gray@camelotgroup.co.uk

and i'll send it provided you email can accept.

To be honest Dave, I,ve had four to five people look at the car, No one can understand why it automatically steer to a full lock,(to the right) once the steering wheel is released, I,ve checked every single joint, there is a slight fluid leak but i cannot see that being the problem, All of them have said it need a rebuild but they cannot be 100%. There is one guy that i spoke to over the phone,he said that there should be an adjustable nut with a screw in the middle. I should loosen the nut & turn the screw until it stops steering automatically, it just needs balancing, I spent two days looking for this, but i could not find this. I need to sort this out as quick as possible as it kills me to not be able to drive it when the weathers been so great.

Thanks

This is quoted from the factory workshop manual.
The valve body is attached by 2 screws on top of the steering bow (with an oil outlet pipe on it. loosen the two mounting screws
1...start the engine. If unit is self-steering tap the valve up or down to correct. When tapping valve 'down', hit valve body on end plug. When tapping valve 'up', tap on head of screws attaching valve body to main valve body. Do not hit control valve body.

2..Turn streeing wheel from stop to stop several times to expel air from system.

CAUTION..Do not turn hard against ends of travel. This may blow out the 'O' rings since the valve screws have not been finally tightened.

3...With steering wheel in straight ahead centre position, start and stop the engine several times, tapping the valve body up or down as required until ther is no movement of the steering wheel when the engine is both started and stopped.

4...The valve is now centered, tighten the two screws attaching the valve body to housing to 200 lbs/ins

try this before paying for a rebuild
