Slow starter motor.

Finally got the car ready to fire up at the weekend but the starter turns rather slowly and will not fire. I am using a good battery from another car, the earths seem good and I even added another temporary earth from engine to body just to be sure, and I have sparks at the coil lead. Also sometimes when I release the ignition key the starter spins faster. The car wasn't a good starter before I started the resto but I suspected the battery then. Now I'm using another battery I was thinking dodgy starter motor but as it suddenly spins faster on releasing the key I'm wondering if its someting else. After reading Daves thread about timing I will check that I havent put the dizzy in 180 degrees out as I removed this to paint the engine. But apart from timing is there anything else that would give these symtoms. I want to be sure before I buy another starter, though I was thinking of upgrading to a mini-starter anyway.

Check this thread out.

And how to do it is also on page 3 of this section.

I was confused aswell, when the key is realeased there is more power getting through because the ignition circuit isnt demanding it.
Fitting the mini starter was the best thing Ive done to my Charger.

Yeah read that before but after reading it again it does sound very similar. Don't know why it would spin faster on releasing the key though. A ballast resistor springs to mind for some reason but its a long time since I had anything to with starting problems on cars, like a good 10 years and I have the memory of a goldfish which doesn't help. I did rewire the car with a painless wiring kit but I'm pretty sure its all correct.

Just to update. Checked timing using info supplied by Dave and adjusted accordingly and the engine fired up although the starter still turns slow but have new mini-starter coming from the states anyway. Only had the down pipes on so it was extremely loud. But fun
