Help! Looking for some guidance on an iron torqueflite on which I'm trying to get the speedo working. From outside the box it would appear that the speedo drive gear is just floating back and forth internally. Obviously something in there must be missing but I am not sure what.
There are two versions of this drive set up....one takes a clamp on speedo cable and one has a screw on cable. Mine is the screw on type.
Has anybody please got a diagram showing what should be in the drive housing so that I can then put out a wanted ad for the missing parts?

Not sure about the old iron versions but on the newer ones the output shaft has a worm drive on it that the speedo gear teeth engage in. You turn the speedo gear housing to engage it as it has to accommodate different diameter drive gears.

Sorry, I know nothing about iron Torqueflites, I've never even seen one.

Yes it's got the drum brake. It's a 58 box. The speedo drive is different to a later torqueflite.
There are 2 versions. The one with a clamp on speedo cable has a drive gear clipped to the cable end. Mine is the screw on type and is different internally.
I'm guessing that there is a drive gear run from the output shaft worm and then maybe a short shaft of some sort. Don't want to unscrew the drive housing until I've got an idea of what should be in there!

stripped this box today, its the long iron version, screw on cable, the housing itself screws in to the ext housing with a small nylon gear through it, it is driven off the out put shaft , the shaft has the drive gear cut in to the shaft itself as all tflites so nothing can move around, hope this helps,

Thanks Duncan. What is happening is that the drive gear seems to float in and out so that it doesn't engage the speedo cable. I wondered if there was a drive gear and then a short shaft and that the shaft may be missing. From what you say it seems there is just a plastic drive gear and the cable attaches to that? if that is the case then my drive gear must have a missing piece on it. Guess we need to remove the big nut and remove it for a look see.

Sorry to bring this question back up but I kept using the car through last year and we only took this apart yesterday for a look.
What I have as Duncan said earlier is a screw in housing(1'' hex with a tapered length heading inwards) with the plastic drive gear sitting in it. My problem is that the drive gear is able to float in and out and so Bananarama! from the steel output shaft gear.
Looking closely it would appear that there should be something which pushes over the output end of the plastic drive gear, which would sit in the centre of the 1'' hex end of the housing and prevent the gear from floating in and out. There is a witness mark as if something once pushed on there but it is long gone.
My guess is that it would need to be some sort of small push on sleeve.
Has anybody any ideas or know if any later box uses something similair?
