Bit concerned about what temperature the box oil should? its going to about 200 in traffic and that's with twin oil coolers.
Changed the oil and filter recently and the oil was dark and a bit egg smelly with some metal fillings in the pan.
I no it doesn't look good but it drives and changes as normal

Just been out in it and tried adjusting the kickdown linkage a bit more but right near the end of adjustment with only a bit of play at full throttle.
Kicks back in to first when crawling now and temperature seems to be at 180, when driving it HARD.
Still a bit smelly on the stick so another oil change.

The box will work at well over 200 but for longevity you are better off at 180 same as the engine.

Usually a high temp is a sign of something slipping though. If you are running below your stall speed with that overdrive on for example.

What about motorway driving , say driving @ two thousand five hundred rpm with a 3000 stall convertor?

That would do it unless you had a very good cooler. or maybe a very good converter. :thumbright:

:?

If the box is slipping anyway , how would the cooler help?

Interesting as i have the same set up , as you do too Dave.

It keeps the temp down so you don't notice it/worry about it. :thumbright:

With 4.10's and a 3 speed I was doing 80 at 4000, you must be bombing along with the overdrive Dave?

4.30 rear gears and only 26.5-inch tall tyres = 77-87mph.

That is true speed. Not indicated on a stock speedo that reads 15% faster. ;)

No, I wasn't going by the speedo Dave....the police told me it was 80.
I guess the small tyre and 4.30's puts the mph down a bit then.

I don't like to see more than 180 degrees either. I agree with Dave, anytime the convertor is slipping it is generating heat, so best to cruise on the motorway above stall speed. The kickdown linkage adjustment is very important too, it increases line pressure in relation to throttle opening, if the line pressure is too low then the box will slip. One thing I did find on my car when the trans was getting hot in traffic, was heat from the headers was heating up the cooler lines. I sleeved the lines in that silver turbo heatproof sheath stuff and that cured it straight away.

everyone will be in the shed tonight puttin heat shield on their cooler lines!!! :thumbright: must get me some of that ;)
