727 torqueflite kickdown

can anyone help me just doin my first project a 68 charger was wondering,do i have to use kickdown or can it be done away with, read that it needs it & would damage box,was toying with using manual valve body r these ok any info much appriciated.

Hi Biff , unless yer gonna use the motor @ the strip i would'nt go with a reverse pattern , to much ag on the road.
Fix the kickdown linkage & enjoy.

Fit a Lokar cable kick down kit,easier to set up and weighs less.

Manual valve body and a rachet on the street is a good laugh, not great on the strip. Start small and do as Brutus says

Pete, What do you mean by this? Just invested in a ratchet shifter, so you've got me thinking now!

too much ag? what? changing gear?
latil has the easiest solution if it doesn't have to look factory
manual valve bodies are more fun though

Well , i like an auto to be an auto , talking on the road , personally i think having to change gear manually with a reverse pattern should be kept for the track , how many get lazy or just forget to put the box in 1 when pulling off from the lights etc , all adds up to heating the convertor & cookin the box.
Guess if you don't get lazy/forget & don't mind shifting up & down most of the time then go for it.
How many get ribbed for driving without the kickdown hooked up , is'nt this the same?

I am with you on this one Adam.
I don't see the point of having a full time manual shift on a street driven automatic. There is no need.
When you fit a transkit you get the ability to shift down at any rpm just like a manual valve body but you also retain the auto shift when in drive.
Reverse pattern valve body is something I would only use on a race car.
Why take away features from your street car and make it less enjoyable to drive?

I'm exactly the oppasite, as an ex. 4 speed philistine, I much prefer a fully manual "automatic", all my cars and even my D100 ended up that way. As long as you have a good shifter they are grrrreat!

So it's purely a preference thing, nothing to do with mechanical gripes or owt?
Phew.
I LOVED driving the four speed on the road, but I know it seems I'm in the minority. As the intention is to street/strip the Barracuda, we can stop worrying about our purchase, then, eh?

I'm with Blue on this one. I love the 'manual' auto in mine! Looks great, too! Plus, being a Winters, it has the cable out of the rear and therefore a much better and 'cooler' route to the 'box.
