when wil it let go!!?

Hmm, wanted to check cause of driveline clunk. I can push the rear yoke upa nd down maybe 1/4". Its not the UJ as thats new and good.
Just wondering how long 'til it might let go :oops:
Just been hooning around and figure i'd better calm down!

It can't Pete, that would have been half way down the strip at Shakey!

Mate, you shouldn't have play in anything like that. We are talking clamping forces and friction fits, gear mesh, backlash here. If the UJ is moving in the yoke, either the UJ, ir the yoke is knackered. If the yoke is moving axially, laterally or longitudinally in the case, either you have shagged bearings, or pinion or ring gear. If the teeth are worn and are bashing together (too much backlash or gears allowing to separate because of poor bearings) you will knock teeth off eventually, which could lock pinion and ring gear (not good). Helical gears need some backlash but its thou, not 1/4 inch. What plane is the 1/4 inch movement in?


As Ivor said, don't wait for it to break, diagnose and fix now. If it lets go, the bill will be big.

By this point I fear the bill will be big anyway - Pinion Bearings and ring and pinion gears must have taken a battering by now; and potentially all the bearings in the Diff......

Yeah, I think you are right Pete. We have many issues related to this type of problem at work. Once the obvious signs are present, its usually too late.

Already did! Got a rebuild kit coming from Hausers, if ring and pinion damaged i'll probably end up buying a set of 3.55s as 3.91s do prove a tad uncivilised except for hooning.
Anyway, thanks for telling me off properly :help: . Just glad I ddibt notice it on the way back from Shakey.

And if its a 489 the crush sleeve has collapsed!!!

No drama, replaced the entire pumpkin yesterday. The nut is tight on the offending diff, but the bearing and seal are failing.
