im fitting a new trunk lock mechanism tommorow, to say the instructions are vague is an understatement, so here goes the parts i have are: the barrel assembly, clip, gasket & several shafts, im assuming that i fit the appropriate shaft to the barrel assembly, fit the barrel assembly through the hole in the trunk, fitting the gasket on the inside of the trunk whilst doing so, locate shaft through lock mechanism and then fit the clip to secure all the parts, is this correct or does the gasket go on the outside of the trunk?

Gasket goes on the outside,I presume it's a clear or black plastic ring.

i do remeber thinking how the hell is this supposed to last 5 minutes never mind 30 years.
simple collection of loosly fitting bits...
i attached a wire to the mechanism leaver by the actual boot latch
and passed it out through the hole where the number plate wire goes.
don't tell anyone... but i can open my boot even when its locked
ideal for the situation where you boot lock fails and the boot is full so you can't bash down the fibre board behnd the back seat and pop a small child through

very fiddly indeed, especially the nice push on spring retainer - mine wouldnt push on no way no how, a little gentle persuasion with a ratchet extension and a hammer sorted it out thou

I once used a diy cycle cable kit and ran a remote lever from beside the drivers seat

thats a good idea but where do you get a cable that long it must need to be 12-15 foot?

It was a complete kit for making several cables with a tub of solder-on ends and about a 10m roll of sheath and inner.
A quick Google turned up these:
