Whats the bast way to paint over chrome? Can you even do it without it peeling off again?

I tried glass bead blasting them (mirrors) at work but its not abrasive enough, it just made the Chrome dull. Would an etch primer hold? Or that Zink stuff?

You can take a grinder to them, then do some finishing on them, before painting.

I think the only way is to have the chrome removed first...or so I'm led to believe.

yep best way to do it , stip the chrome .. then a good DAing 80 ..180 ..240 ... etch then 2k primer

Thanks guys! I dont really wanna have to strip the Chrome off of a set of Wing mirriors with a grinder though, seem's far to harsh and easly fouled up.

I found a few answers on-line about it, anyone tried any of these methods?

"I later learned about the acid etching primer body shops use to paint
over chrome. First rough surface lightly with steel wool, clean with
some type of surface prep. Use the acid etching primer just as you
would regular primer, then finish as you would normally paint. This
works for the lower rocker trim on the doors also, but use more thin
coats of paint and clear coat to help resist rock chips."


"Painting chrome is no big deal.. ruff it up by lightly sandblasting
and then use a zinc phosphate primer.. Dupont makes a good one. #615s
and 616s.. it's a two part mix. Then use your preferred primer. I use
strictly urethane.. the paint won't come off..."

Well the second method you added, goes back to my first response. Get it blasted!

Etch primer bites into bare metal to give you a really good key. I don't think it will do the same over a slightly scuffed chrome.

But you can always try, the worst is, the paint will fall off. And you would have spent a lot of money.

Do it right, do it once.
