Fault with the diagnostics???
Get it checked out by a guy with a proper reader. It could be anything (put is probably a sensor). In many cases, the sensors for these gadgets are more unreliable than the component they are monitoring.

Si,
From scooby thread:
subaru has confirmed defective catalytic sensor used in many models '98-00,. For intermittent hesitation, every sube I've ever owned has done so occasionally.
Could be dodgy sensor - Oxygen, cat, anti knock, etc.
Need to get it on computer, Si.

The check engine light does not give information about fluid levels. What it does indicate is a failure in the car's emission controls. Could be anything from a bad oxygen sensor to a loose spark plug wire. Get the codes read and go from there. (Cut and paste by Kev
