It should be cast into the side of the block (in code) Im sure Alex will fill you in better on this.

Guy is correct, it is cast like this: 6-21-68 this would be a June 26th 1968 motor, it is pretty easy to see cast into the area below the core plugz

If it is an Aussie block there will be a number stamped on a lug at the back by the bellhousing (just above the starter). For a 318 it will be prefixed with A221, then a letter denoting the year followed by the serial.

Thought I'd say because I have seen a few Aussie blocks cirulating in various cars.

Dumb question No.268 : do the 318/340/360 all start life as the same casting? also are there any 'heavy duty' or race castings and what would i look for if i was to build a blown smallblock, for example?

Nope. They are all different castings. For example the 340 has the same crank as the 318 but a 318 will not bore out to a 340.

The T/A block is the best. Try finding one though.

Didn't they make a 340 'X' block that was supposed to have all sorts of extra strength etc?

Yes James its the T/A block its a 4 bolt main block as Dave say's just try to find one rocking horse's come to mind.

They were cast to accept 4 bolt mains but they did not have them from the factory, as for finding them, see Pete ! he has 2, shame they are in proper T/A style cars !
