we've had a very old laptop sitting doing nowt for a few years

Inspiron 7000 400MHz 64 meg ram

2 years ago we tried a xp instal which failed, screen turned off with 34 minutes to go

Long story short.... my 3 year old grand daughter found the damn thing and it's now "her" computer

I finally figured out the problem with the XP install, needs to be plugged into an external monitor while installing, xp pro now installed which isn't no mean feat considering

problem is it's soooooooo slow, took a look at Unbunu, downloaded and burned to cd, I cant get it to work ( no internet connection)

Q is.... anyone point me in the direction of a Linux download that will actually work (needs to be very light but with a good interface)

Or need a win 98 pref SE with product code

of course our win 95 and win 98 went in the bin when we got XP Prof

would like to try something other than Bananarama! MS

forgot to say after MS i'm a little lost with this Linux

doesn't seem to be fire it in the cd drive and away ya go

found it kinda funny that the download for ubunu was 715mb and a cdr is 700 if you're lucky

Linux of the vintage you are talking about is a command line operating system.

you will need to know about disk partitioning to do it

standard linux install uses about 4

you then need to get K desktop or similar


i.e the process is like builidng a DOS PC from scratch

updating it with windows

and then office.

but more complicated

the Plug and play linux distribution idea is recent i.e last 3 or 4 years and hence they tend to only run well on recent hardware

i.e even modern versions are not that "point and click"

you no longer need to be a skilled UNIX admin to do the job but it aint windows

Did fancy the idea of getting her used to something that wasn't MS

There is a whole range of Linux distributions around and some are certainly capable of running on very low-end systems - but it's going to take so much time and effort... and then you have to find Linux applications...
Get a copy of Windows 98. Available from an internet near you, or ebay for 99p.
