sure grip fitting

hi can anyone tell me how easy or hard it is to fit in a suregrip,ive got an 8 3/4 axle ive removed it from car as im having it powder coated,got shafts out & removed pumpkin.this is where im a bit worried dont want to just dive in,its ok taking it apart but just wondered if theres owt i should know & check 1st,& is swapping crown wheel & pinion a straight forward job,hope this make,sense regards steve :help: ps merry christmas to everyone :santa:.

Not at all sure exactly what you are doing here.

Are you fitting a suregrip unit to your existing axle? This is the easiest to do.

Or are you swapping your ring and pinion from one pumpkin to another?
If you are doing the latter then no you can't just swap the pinion over. It has to be shimmed between the pinion head and bearing to create the correct depth of mesh. Not easy to do if you don't know what you are doing.

In either case you will need to set backlash so you will need a dial gauge.

Don't tell me you are trying to do things like this without a copy of the factory workshop manual? :banghead:

I think that the rebuild depends on which type of pumkin you have e.g.741, 489 etc.

Only when it comes to setting the front bearing pre-load. The rest is the same. Nothing is better than the factory manual in this regard.

If i knew exactly what he was trying to do i can describe and illustrate it. i have rebuilt a few.

hi im using same pumpkin so dont need to mess with pinion feel a right pillock now,but i need to swap ring gear. :read2:

Yes. You need to remove your existing ring gear and bolt it to your new sure grip unit.

So simply remove the caps and bearings/adjusters from your existing ring carrier. Then remove the ring gear itself from the carrier (the bolts are left hand thread) and swap the ring onto the sure grip unit.

Pinions and ring gears are made as matched pairs. So you must use your existing ring gear with your existing pinion.

When you have bolted your ring gear to the sure grip unit you just need to re-assemble the whole thing again.

However. Follow the backlash adjustment proceedure VERY carefully. Torque only ONE cap bolt on each side and adjust the bearings until you get the correct backlash. Make sure your dial gauge is as square on to the ring teeth as possible.

And if you are rebuilding a clutch type suregrip there are 2 flavours of rebuild kit. Get the wrong one and you end up with a spool :oops: :oops: :oops:
