Now I always thought that was the reason behind the mask! So if one driver wasnt available anothe could be used. Never thought it was just one guy doing all the stig work.

Erm, he was named in The Sun ages back in an article about Top Gear having broken a classic Bentley ... at least I think it was him (?)

I only remember Stig of the dump.
He made windows for his house out of jam jars.
As he was of neanderthal decent I'm not sure he was much of driver though.

STIG is the name used on top gear to disguise the identity of the people who can realy drive. its been numerous people during the stigs existance and if you look closely at least one stig wasnt a bloke 
the drivers enlisted for this role are all top people in their field, as far as i can make out they have come from:- formula 3, formula 1, indy, rally, stunt background and also test drivers from some of the top supercar manufacturers. at the end of the day they can drive the pants off me and make top gear a watchable program so who cares who (or what, if super human) they are.
