This is going to catch a lot of people out and could land them with a £1000 fine. The current photo ID driving license needs renewing every 10 years to keep the photo up to date at a cost to the holder of £17.
Read all about it here..............

I still have my paper one (last change of address was 1993) but it has dropped to bits and one bit (not a very important bit I'm sure) seems to have gone missing....

Paper ones are still valid and you don't have to change to a photocard yet.
If you need a replacement you will only get a photocard and they will charge about £22. Then it needs changing every 10 years as you may look older than your picture.
If your licence has your old address on it, then you can get your photocard for free when you send in for an address change. I did this, my house has a name now (on my licence).

I only needed a photocard because I need a digital tachograph card and they are issued by DVLA using the photocard licence details.

At the heart of the confusion is the small print on the tiny credit-card-size photo license, which is used in conjunction with the paper version.
Just below the driver name on the front of the photo card license is a series of dates and details - each one numbered.
Number 4b features a date in tiny writing, but no explicit explanation as to what it means.
The date's significance is only explained if the driver turns over the card and reads the key on the back which states that '4b' means 'license valid to'.
i inquired about this at work as we have a 'safer driving' initiative, i got this reply ...
"The DVLA send reminder packs to the license holder approximately 56 days prior to the expiry date of the photograph. In the case of medical renewals the reminder pack will be sent approximately 90 days prior to photograph expiry.
It is a criminal offence to fail to surrender the license to renew an expired photograph. The offence carries a penalty of up to £1000. I believe you can apply online for renewal."

Mine never seems to get chance to go more than a year without something having to be altered. I should set up an account.

Just got mine back as just renewed HGV licence. Got stung for £90 for the medical, thats now going to be every 5 years,DVLA sent it back with a reminder about the photo renewal ,which will be in 2 years. So thats gonna cost me again. That and all HGV holders need to do a CPC course now. Its 35 hours over 5 years, yet more money to fork out.Is it worth it, all potential truckers beware.
