Oil guage not working.

Hi fellas, how do you test the oil pressure guage and sender unit? My guage was working after I reconnected the instrument panel but after a few days sometimes when I fired the engine up there was no reading. If I switched the engine off and the on again it would work (sometimes) now it doesn't work at all. The other guages work fine. Any ideas?

Sounds like a dodgy earth to me.

Well it's working again

I took the instrument panel out to make sure the needle wasn't dragging on the guage face which it didn't appear to be but I bent the needle out a tad anyway popped the panel back in and it works.

Hi Matt, funny you say that, all of my gauges have been working OK apart from my oil pressure gauge, I thought today I must sort it out, but was not 100% sure where the sender was located on the engine, I gave James a call (my nearest charger for under the hood referencing!!) as suspected the sender was the small bowl shaped thingy at the very back of the engine, that the odd wire I have had for a while hanging out of the loom, was missing from !! connected it back up and hey presto, another problem solved !!.
I would say that on mine and James's, the connection seems quite loose and the spade connecter may need a bit of crimping to make good connection ?
HOWEVER, wondered what pressure's other 383 charger chaps are getting ?

Stock pumps will give 45 psi @ around 2K high vol pumps with 'hemi' relief springs will go to 80, idle is usually around 20-25.

I'm half expecting mine to pack up again as it only started working after I took the guages out and moved the needle by hand. I think maybe there was some slight corrosion which caused to stick. Who knows? Time will tell.

Well wadda ya know! It's packed up again. FANTASTIC! I think I will have to rig up an idiot light. At least then the idiot driving will know he's got oil pressure.

Matt, you've really started something now !!!!!
I thought beause I was so clever in getting the oil gauge working I just as well sort the rest of it out, I,E, my speedo, clock and dash lights, so I pull out all the panel clean it all up, replace all the bulbs, got the clock and the speedo working again, put it all back in everything worked - in brilliant illumination as well - wow I was impressed, then . . . . the oil pressure gauge stopped, so i gave it a tap and it came on again, then it stopped again so I still aint 100% happy with it
Whats this going to be then fella's. dodgy earth (if so where does the gauge earth, is it using the neg on the ammeter or through the dash panel itself) or is it the sender is tricky or is it the gauge any guesses ????

A blummin good starting pont is the main earth bond from the passenger side rear of the block to the bulkhead. If this is loose/coroded, you will get all manner of gauge problems.
It is usually bolted into the spare threaded hole in the cylinder head behind the rear inlet manifold runner on its own. Try that for starters.
