Leak at speedo drive(727),nipped the big nut up ,still leaking. Is there an o ring or seal behind the plate underneath ,secured with 2 bolts. Help.

O-ring on the speedo drive gear housing. Not sure what you mean by a seal under with two bolts? You looking at the tailhousing circlip cover?

Dave, its the speedo drive housing where the cable goes in. Theres a large nut on the end of the cable . That screws into the housing,held in by what looks like a locking plate. Ijust wondered if it was a seal or oring under it. Sounds by your answer its an o ring. Cheers for that ,will investigate tomorrow.

You must be looking at the speedo adapter.

The speedo cable has a large nut on the end of it and it screws to the speedo adapter.

This adapter should be held in place with a clamp that is itself held in place with a single screw.

The adaptor can rotate to allow for different sized speedo drive gears and you should see numbers corrosponding to the number of teeth on the gear stamped around the adaptor.

This adaptor has an o-ring around the outside of it. If the oil is coming from around the outside of the adaptor it is that.

However.
There is also a small internal seal in the adaptor.
If you are getting oil into the speedo cable then it is this small seal you need to replace.

Pulled the drive out yesterday ,no O ring . Looked all over the place at work yesterday,too small,too big ,too fat. Had to put it back in the same for now,with a smear of silicone. Seems to have stopped it for now. This will be temporary till i get another O ring, might as well change the cable seal while were in there. Oh hum.

The O-ring on this one I just located in my shed looks OK if you want it or the whole thing?

Just a quick question on this, I assume if the gearbox is okay (as in, in the car and full), and you take out the speedo fitting, then some oil will come out ?

Looks like I need an O-ring also as getting a small weep from around the fitting.

Apart from Dave's generous offer, did you find anywhere that sold both the O-ring and the cable seal, Chip ?

Didnt have time to look before Dave popped up with his reply. Dunc or Blue would have been my next port of call. Lost about half a gallon when i pulled the drive housing Sandy.

There is a small chance I have another o-ring in a box of bits in the garden shed right at the back under a load of stuff.

I'm in there today to get the gardening gear out so i will see if i can find the box.

Thought I found a couple last night but they were distributor seals.

Jack the back of the car really high when you do it.

I would expect to loose about half a pint, not half a gallon.

I have both seals in stock if you need them.

Found another O-ring.
