56 Dodge Gearbox problem

A friend of mine has a 1956 Dodge Custom Royal with a red ram V8 engine and box.
A few years ago he drove it to Blackpool and the gearbox dropped all it's fluid.
So he had it rebuilt and the torque converter at a place in Burnley.
Since then it will only do between 7-12 mile before dropping fluid but it doesn't lose it when the car is parked on tick over.
He also says there are iron fillings in the sump.
Can anybody help him?
