Steering box removal - help required!

Stu has been trying to remove the steering box from our Satellite but has come a cropper trying to remove the rollpin right at the end of the column (female) where it goes onto the box (male).

Anyone had a go at this? I gather it needs a tool that locates inside the pin but has a shoulder that sits on the end face of the pin, the same dia as the o/d of the pin (approx 1/4") :?

Anyone got a tool, or had to make your own?

Have decided to get the steering box rebuilt over here, prob use http://www.power-steering.co.uk/ , rather than getting a Firm Feel box from the States, so need to get it off asap so we can get it sorted.

:help: please?

Whatever you do, do for heaven's sake use the correct size, stepped bronze drift.

We have standards here you know...

If its a roll pin use the correct size punch if you have one and a good hammer two or three wacks and out it will come use these on various bits of plant they ca be tight but will move

just removed my column again .... long story  , if its the same as a charger
can measure the thinkness on the pin tomorrow :thumbright:
should be easy to come out , if it don't at first ... try not to keep pounding on it as you can destroy the shere pins in the column , you will have to take the coupler box apart , to get it off
before you put the pin back use lots of copper grease & wire Bananarama! ! if rusty

Mine wouldn't budge and did not want to hammer too hard for fear of damaging box or column....though maybe not an issue with box if it is being rebuilt.

Anyway, I used my air chisel
No, not with the chisel attachment silly, there is a pointed attachment and the end fit perfectly over the end of the roll pin. One BRAP and it freed right up. A bit unpredictable but anyway it worked for me!!

I'd be interested in more details of the rebuild - do they do a firmer assist (like firm feel), and inspect/replace internal components other than just the seals? And what are they like on pricing? Might be a good option.....

just put my column back & for got to measure the pin sorry  #-o  ... but i can tell you the pin punch i use is 6.5 mm its a old draper one had it for yonks .... still sell that size , fits in the coupler hole & works perfact !! stick it in the end of a 18 " three eight scocket extention bar & tape it to stop it dropping off ..couple of blows with a dead blow hammer should do it :thumbright:
