1970 Challenger RT/SE 440 engine removal detail tonight, didn't take too long to hoick the little critter out of there, not sure if I did the right thing in leaving the bell-housing attached to the box, thought about removing the box & going for a straight lift , but after a tele conference with the Wigged one, I elected to proceed with caution & it all seemed to go ok, I removed the clutch linkage to save any possibility of it getting bent.





phase II of the operation is to strip the engine down & see what needs doing, rumour has it that this was a Mopar exchange engine fitted post 73 & has low comp pistons.
Much pretty stuff going into this one, stay tuned

Steel crank so may not be too bad; mind you, the pistons could end up getting replaced...

yep, thats what i said! new pistons, up the compression, Eddy heads etc..

pretty much resigned to seeing the dished pistons of mundaneness when the lids come off, in fact I sort of hope we do

if thats my old 440 rt see chall, thats poo about the engine its had about 5 in it since it came over here at one time had a pretty quick one, think that is a smax engine

Unlikely to have dished pistons Mike, it's normally a flat top. If its low compression there will no valve reliefs and the piston will be anywhere from 70 to 100thou down the bore at TDC. Six pack pistons would have valve reliefs and be about 20 thou. down the bore.

Like it Dunc, love it when a legend is brought crashing down only going off what the guy told me, maybe it is a half truth insomuch that it may have had a replacement mopar engine early on it's life, but several since....
