Through Paris at 140mph illegally in 1978

I was reading this article: http://www.slate.com/id/2221388/pagenum/all/#p2 about stuntmen and the films and sequences they think changed movies when I found a link to this short film

C'était un rendezvous: A 1978 short film by New Wave director Claude Lelouch* may be the most thrilling single piece of driving ever filmed. The director, who had no permits to film or to stop traffic, hooked a camera to the front bumper of a Mercedes-Benz (in the only bit of film trickery, the sound of the motor was played by a five-speed Ferrari) and filmed the entire movie in a single cinema-verité take: He drove through the streets of Paris at five in the morning, through red lights, around the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs-Élysées, against one-way traffic, over sidewalks, at speeds up to 140 miles per hour. The film ends after nine terrifying minutes when the driver parks the car in Montmartre and a blonde comes up the stairs toward Sacre Coeur. (It was a date.) After the first showing, the director was arrested for endangering public safety.

Mental stuff. Check it out.

Cue the usual arguments on wheather or not the film was speeded up, what car really provided the engine noise, can you see/hear anomolies in the film...

Still quite cool whatever the truth, always worth a look. :thumbright:

Mad sod certainly knew where he was going.
Don't think it's sped up due to the speed of the birds flying away and people walking.
Definitely had to be early for no traffic to be about.
I bet he picked his route carefully as half way thru there's alot of traffic going the other way.

Good though, thanx for that :thumbright:

Nutter !

More odds n sods...

- Its a mercedes, not a ferrari. The sound is dubbed on later.
- Its not nearly as fast as you think. Theres been loads of analysis as to the timings, route and speeds etc. Average 42mph or something daft. Its the sound and low low camera that makes the speed.
- There was only 1 lookout - on the entrance to the louvre - its completely blind, so they posted someone.

Had some stuff on it somewhere. Will dig it out.

Either way, its still fantastic. It doesnt matter how they did it !

As I have said in the last few times this has come up.
It is the combination of a short focal length lens and it's very low position close to the ground that makes it look really fast. I doubt it did more than 60mph at any point.

I agree, its a scam. The way that thing is revving and changing gear suggests a much higher speed. Listen to how many times he drops gears approaching sharp bends. He doesnt a couple of times, on damp, cobbled streets. Ferrari's of that age wont go round hairpins in top at 9000rpm on a wet cobbled street.

maybe the cobbles were made of rubber.....

or the tyres has special glue on them....

you don't know......do you....

David Nineninenine (if indeed that is your surname), I am concerned with what you as a teacher, are filling the heads of our children with. If we ever get a Prime Minister who declares the moon really is made of green cheese I will hold you personally responsible.
