As it's illegal to run white front indicators post sept 65,I'm trying to work out a compromise.I can't put an amber bulb in as it's double filament side/turn. options appear to be separate lams for turn and keep the originals as side or modding the original to 2 bulb holders with a centre divider-1 amber -1 clear. Don't say just run it as I have a contact at VOSA who will prob go round to the test centre next day& give hassle He knows me the car and the law! Opinions please

Double filement orange bulb in the original unit, replace outer headlights with UK spec, they have a hole in the reflector surface, two new wiring looms from an MG (Moss sell them) they have sidelight bulb holders fixed to them that shine through the headlight 'hole' re wire the sidelight +ve from the original unit to the new sidelight wire and you are set, car looks original and is legal.
Drinks are on you !

i run amber sidelamps on all my yanks, never been moaned at for it by any MOT testers. I have those small headlamps here but not ones with sidelamp hole, (you would have to drill that yourself if you wanted to)

on my Charger I had clear lenses with double filament orange bulbs, then when one of the bulbs blew, put normal ones in - no problems.
(Then again haven't been able to drive it for over a year now)

If I wire this as suggested, can I trigger the headlamp doors from the sidelight feed ?

Overwhelmed by the replies to that bit

Does anyone know? H/lamp doors don't operate until switch is in h/lamp position. I presume the door relay is tripped by the current going to h/lights,if I take that feed from the sidelight instead will it work or do I blow it all?

Id guess that if you wired your headlamp doors from the sidelights they would open when in the sidelight position and with the headlamps off. Probably not what you want?
Id recommend to identify when you want the doors to operate, find that ciruit run a trigger supply from it to operate a relay then feed the doors solenoid or motor or whatever it is from a seperately fused circuit (ideally) via the relay contacts. Make sure your relay contact rating is up to the job!
One of these days i'll get rid of that very old and tired looking fuse box underneath my steering column and put in a proper sized one with relays etc so its all in one place and somewhere where i can actually get to it!

umm i see you already have a relay there, if you want to use that then disconnect the current trigger wire that is off the dipped beam circuit otherwise there may be a possiblity you may overload the sidelight circuit.
I dont think these old cars have relays on the headlamp circuits do they?

No theres no relay between switch and lamps, just a lead on the switched side to a relay for the door motor. Or so the good book says . I've found that some of the original loom wire colours don't match the factory manual, so thats another few hours with a meter

Going back under the dash now

if you get stuck, i'll take a look for you, as i (strange though it may sound ) love doing car electrics. Faultfinding, repairing, making mods, designing custom circuits to do a certain job. If every repair job i ever had to do on a car was electrics, electronics, etc i would be happy!

Thanks for the offer Will

I'll carry on until I get to the hit it stage, don't mind electrics,I hate dashboards in particular all those hidden fixings and brittle plastic! Dash is coming out I've got a mph speedo coming over soon Thought it odd that mine read to 200

Dunnit

With key in any position, switch to s/lights-doors open,on to h/lights -still open. Switch off doors close. Had all lights on for over 1/2 hour-nothing gets warm or smells or smokes
