Sender Unit Blues

Bought me some nice shiny new gauges from Summit. Found somewhere to mount the pod under the dash. Bought the mechanical ones cos they are more accurate!

Ran the capillary all nice and neat and then came to remove the old sender unit. And there my woes started... how do you remove it? I can get a spanner on it but there is not the room to move it without hitting everything. I tried some new words that Guy had taught me but these were of no avail! (it does unbolt doesn't it? - the assembly manual was not helpful).

Never mind onto the water sender, through the bulkhead over the engine using some spare spark plug wire clips and ready to fit. Have tow sender units in place already- greedy i know but there you are! One currently in use is a skinny little thing and the new sender would not fit so over to the fat one. hmm, Spanner would not fit without hitting everything (deja vu) socket set was not deep enough to clear the sender unit already in there! Is there a trick to this or do I need to remove the hoses to get access?

Is there nothing straight forward on a Mopar?

The oil one will come out, it is a tapered 1/4 NPT (National Pipe Thread) thread pitch (if the same as the small block unit). You need big socket, can't remeber the exact size, extension bar and ratchet. I found a breaker bar more useful myself!

The water sender usually rusts in nicely and won't come out without serious persuasion. I still cannot remove mine, and I have been trying for 2 years!

There is a way but it usually ends up with scrapped knuckles.

Have you tried with a box-spanner?

Scratch what I said about the oil pressure sender, it is different to mine. I believe the problem you have with clearance could be solved with a cut down cheapo spanner.

Still like to see you remove the temp sender without destroying the thread, socket and/or your knuckles!

Just an idea, I know the sender is jammed up against the bulkhead, so what about an oil pump strap wrench on a socket extension?

Assuming it doesn't rip the sender off the nut, it could do the trick and it's gonna be a whole lot easier than getting under the dash and putting your hand through the wiper motor hole! :D

sometimes you can get just enough depth out of a standard socket buy only inserting the extension bar a little way into the back of the socket. That way the terminals of the sender can sit in side the square hole a little

good luck!
