Hi guys,

Thought I'd check the timimg on my car tonight and couldn't find the timing marks on the crank pulley. In the end I took the plugs out and the rocker cover off and found tdc on number one with a depth gauge. The rotor lines up number one plug but the mark on the crank pulley is approx' 45 degrees out. Could it be the wrong pulley?

Your thoughts would be welcome.

Yes, some small block timing marks are on the right side of centre on the timing chest and some on the left.

Someone's maybe changed the timing chain cover at some point,or the pulley, both things are interchangeable, but should be fitted together!

Thats right Tiff the cast iron water pump, ali timing chain cover and damper is differant to the latter ali water pump, timing chain cover and damper. The timing marks are about 45 deg. different when looked at from the front. I think the reason for the change was that the lower waterpump outlet was on a differant side

If you re-mark the damper so it is correct make sure you mark TDC as accuratly as you can.

The best way is with a dial indicator on the piston when it is down the bore slightly and the engine rotated to the same piston position in both directions. TDC is then exactly half way between the two. You can also do this with the head on using a piston stop screwed into the spark plug hole.

I had to do this myself the other week on Dave Horn's Barracuda (which now has a 340 under the six pack). He had no timing tag as well as the wrong damper which was making it tricky to set up.
