Edelbrock Performer problems

Hi guys, I think I have dirt in the Carb - there is fuel pressure (New Carter Pump) but the engine will produce not power and will only periodically surge when you press on the gas and then dies away again.

Does anyone have access to exploded diagrams or have stripped one of these before - I know a fair bit about Holleys but have no practical experience on the performer series. Motor is a 440.

Pete, you should find all you need to know here

Sounds to me like your metering rods aren't "stepping up" to the power circuit, which can be fixed with stronger springs, easily accessible from the top of the carb. Probably worth investing in a tuning kit.

Hi Adam, I just KNEW you would respond, thanks :D :D

The car worked perfectly before, but I was taking some students to their Prom and the car just started playing up and finally would not go above 35 mph....broke down in the village mains street (which if you have visited you will know is not very big!!!)

Ended up taking them in the T/A; everyone soaking wet but grinning hugely as we entered the campus sideways and then when performing rolling Burnouts in front of the College Principle.......Jeez that T/A is one tough car - brilliant motor Alex!!


At least they will remember that aspect of their Prom Party..

We need pics of the prom night Pete - sounds like fun :D

Does sound like plugged jets doesn't it? They are a little more prone to dirt than Holleys, as they face down on the floor of the fuel bowls, rather than sideways as in Holley metering blocks. You'll have to lift the top off the carb to unscrew them, but at least you don't have to drain the carb first.

Hi Adam,

The texts imply you can take the top of the carb off in situ on the car but that sounds a bit risky to me - do you take the carb off the manifold when you work on it?

All I need to do now is drop a screw down the Venturi......

Yes Pete, it's feasible to take the top off the carb (e.g. for a jet change) in situ - just make sure you completely remove the screws holding it down first. DAMHIK :wink:

Having said that, if you need to clean muck out of your fuel bowls, it will be easier to remove the whole carb anyway.
