I think it's about time I did something about the excessive amount of play in my diff....I've put up with the 'clunking' on previous cars and done nothing about it, but there's just too much play here to ignore.

I'm guessing that having someone rebuild the diff would be the way to go, or is there any part I could have a go at changing myself first? If it does end up being a rebuild can anyone recommend somewhere to get it done in the South London, Kent or Surrey areas?

is it the diff or the UJs on the prop shaft...

if its the later i'd be changing them ASAP don't want to pole vaulting the car if the front falls off

mind if ya paying for someone to set it up best get the centre and gears you actually want first.

suggest a big car like that might like a sure grip if it hasn't got one already

i had mine rebulit about ten years ago with 2.92:1 gears which with hindsight was a long legged short sighted mistake. great fun at illegal speeds but a bit of a slug from the lights
should have gone the 3.23:1 or 3.5:1 gear set
nice middle of the road choices for spirited driving but not into drag race territory with the associated monumental fuel consumption.

I imagine 3.9:1 and 4.11:1 to be a right pain in the ass if you do some driving and it gives yer axles and bearings a whole lot more grief

I drove my dart with 3.23. 3.55 and 3.91. I liked 3.23 overall.
on my old Dart I had a diff set up by someone who wass not a specialist. Never again.

Can you come down to either Ashford, where my workshop is, or my house on the Isle of Sheppey for a check-up?

Everyone has a bad Diff/axle, after 40 years of abuse, they just wait till it breaks and then fall over when it costs a fortune to put right LOL!

Apparently the UJ's are okay...I had the car checked over when it first arrived in the country and the mechanic said the UJ's were fine and it must be play in the diff after he'd emerged from under the car after pulling and tugging on stuff. Also, when I was adjusting the rear brakes the other day and had the rear up on axle stands I noticed that I could spin the wheel a fair amount before the prop shaft started turning...again with a clunk.

@ Bacca - yes mate I will pop down to Ashford - thanks for that. But, can't make it just yet. Sod's law reared it's ugly head at the weekend and just when I though the diff was the only thing that needed sorting my brake servo went. I've got a new one on the way from Rock auto so should have that sorted within a week or two. I'll get back in touch with you then.
