Goodwood Revival 2011 - a few Sunday pics

Decided to to give Goodwood a whirl this year, rather than the HRDs, as they clashed again. Opted for the Sunday because the racing looked more to our taste (similar to the Saturday but included the RAC TT celebration (60-64 GT cars) and the Whitsun Trophy (for 63-66 Sports Prototypes).
I forgot to ask for good weather when I booked the tickets, so whilst the Fri & Sat turned out to be dry down Goodwood way, the Sunday was forecast to have the chance of a few showers. Unfortunately you have to book the tickets in advance so you cant wait & see which days has the best forecast. As it turned out, 'chance of a few showers' was a bit of an understatement :thunder:

Weather aside, I cant think of a nicer place to have to drive to down here in the bottom half of the country than Goodwood. We did think of staying on the A3 right down to and along the A27 (all dual carriageway) then back up the short distance to Goodwood, but decided to stick with the scenic route from just south of Guildford down the A283 & A285, thru quaint villages & towns like Petworth and on to Goodwood. Traffic was a bit heavier than last time we did this route 3 years ago so the last 5 or 10 miles was a bit stop-start. But when you're surrounded by other classics on their way to Goodwood, the traffic jam dont seem so bad 8-)

Once we'd parked up in the Pre-73 car park, the owner of the Facel Vega that had been behind us for the previous 30 mins or so, after complimenting us on the car, said he'd had to turn his radio up for all that time... he liked the sound coming from the back of our car but presumably not as much as he liked Terry Wogan or the Archers... or whatever else you get on a Facel Vega radio on a Sunday morning!

Soon after arriving we bumped into Adam Ford who was there in his usual Goodwood finery - he says it's not his usual weekend gear but I'm not convinced [-(

We tried to arrange our day around the races we were most interested in, so started off with a quick look round the car park. After about an hour we'd only seen about 1/5th of the cars there, and others were still arriving, but we needed to head over to the circuit for the main event. I think it was Adam that said a while ago the he heard about a foreign visitor that spent all day looking round the Pre-73 car park, thinking that was the Revival meeting, and didnt even get to see what was going on at the circuit. Bit naive I guess but I can see it could take all day to look around if that's your cup of tea...

First race we watched was the Richmond Trophy 'for front engined Grand Prix cars of a type that raced between 1950 & 1960'. Found a spot just after the first corner where it wasnt too crowded and took too many pics as usual, trying to get one decent one. I couldnt tell you who won tho.. hopefully Adam will be along soon with better pics and more useful info :read2:

Soon after this we headed back to the car to grab some lunch before the St Mary's Trophy ('for production saloon cars of a type that raced between 1960 and 1966') started. Time for a bit more scrutineering in the car park...

Unfortunately by now the rain had set in so we headed back to the circuit and made our way to the indoor 'Earls Court' car show to while away a few minutes, hoping the rain would clear before the St Mary's was due to start. The theme inside the Earls Court show was, if memory serves, 'the most beautiful cars in the world' or summat like that, plus there were a few manufacturers that had new and old models on display.

By the time we came out, the rain had stopped but the race had started and we were a long way from any decent spots to watch the race from, so we made our thru the pits back to where we watched the last race, so we were ready for the next. Before the race was a display by the Spitfire Squadron - a collection of 10 'Spits' flying round the circuit for about 5 mins, in three groups; 2 at the front followed by two groups of 4. Hopefully Adam got a decent shot of the 10 together, as all i could manage from where we were was a few attempts at a group of 4. Impressive enough in iteself, but see 10 together was worth the journey alone!

Yes nice pics Rob....looked like a good event. Know what you mean about the 'having better things to do on a Sunday morning' thing....I got the evil stare when my better half saw me out 'playing' (as she calls it) with the cars this morning :D

Yes, well done chaps :salute:

Nothing like Goodwood for CLASSIC AUTOMOTIVE PORN =P~ ............only Pebble Beech comes close but totally different of course.

Dunc......... IF and WHEN I do have a spare 3/4 of a mill to spend it won't be on a Miura as much as I luv em =P~ ( or any other car ) ............no son, it is always going to be a warbird of course ...............knackered P51.........ditto Vought F4U Corsair =P~ ............ These cars are pieces of art no question, but driving is restricted to strangled roads, flying is another dimension that I cannot explain in words,..........and, I would rather be fettling and drooling ( ok making luv :love10: ) over me plane than a car anyday :thumbright: ;)

Oh, BTW Dunc, if Bri n you do decided to go, FFS make sure it's the "Revival" bash, I can just see the pair of ya dressed up in period gear :hippy2: :clown: :thumbright:

yep if i get bri to go we will have to go in the supersports and dress the part he can be my pussy galore,.............. :D

Sorry for the delay chaps, laptop went on the fritz last nite. Think I wore it out posting the other pics :smash: :deadski:

Thanks for the kind words so far tho :salute:

The next 'must see' race for us was the RAC TT Celebration, 'a one-hour, two-driver race for closed cockpit GT cars in the spirit of the RAC TT races, 1960-1964'. ie Astons, Cobras, Ferrari 250GTOs etc 8-)
