im looking at making a billet ali deep sump for the 727 box on the dart and i have 2 thoughts, do i just make it deep to hold more fluid with fins on the outside for cooling or should i sacrifice a little fluid and put fins inside aswell to help cooling, any thoughts apreciated

That would be my preference.

I went with deeper/larger capacity sump, my thought being I have long lines from the sump to the back of the car to the Gearbox rad/fan.

So wanted to ensure I had enough in the sump, while the rest is being pumped through the flow & return lines & rad/fan.

I wouldnt have thought fins on the inside would make any difference to cooling tbo Trev

im thinking more surface area to conduct heat away from the fluid.

I like your thinking Trev and you are right that would help if you were only using the sump to cool.

BUT if you have an adequate external oil cooler you don't need to go to any of those lengths. A cooler will do the job.

Just go for capacity and baffling. Keeping the oil where it should be and the pick-up submerged is the main priority. ;)

Why not a deep sump with fins and cooling tubes running through it, best of both worlds
Also magnets attached to the inside to pull debris away from the mechanicals

something Like the Derale :thumbright: 8-)

ive seen those but want something unique, having fins inside and out will have a similar effect, also i intend to have all surfaces with a ribbed finish to give even more cooling area it will have fins all over the outside that arnt strait so the air deflects round bends to aid cooling and it will be machined from solid billet (all the ones you can buy are cast) it wont be cheap to do but its for my car so thats not an issue.
