odometer

I`m asking this for my mate,his speedo works but the odometer does`nt anybody any idea what to look for? anybody else had this problem? the car is a `66 coronet,thanks
well later ones had plastic gears in the mile-o-meter and these in some cases were press fit on the metal shafts
they occaionslly split and spin or fall to bits
earlier ones may be metal but may not
